The Market

The total consumption of seafood in the world is increasing and has almost doubled since 1961. The world market for mussels is large and there is a strong tradition of consumption of mussels in central Europe. The total consumption has increased from 1.3 million tons since 1992 to 2.8 million in 2022.

Mussels have maintained their value despite fluctuations over time. While world consumption of seafood is increasing, there is a decline in the production volume of mussels. There is excess demand in countries such as Belgium, Chile, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Canada, New Zealand, Spain.
The mussel is the future feed for salmon farming and the chicken industry. The catch of Atlantic Salmon was 2.8 million tons in 2022, of which Norway had 1.5 million tons.

To produce 2.8 million tons of salmon, about 3.7 million tons of feed is needed, it takes 1.2-1.5 kilos of feed to produce 1 kilo of salmon.
